OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES






Project Requirements:

You and your tribe are expected to create a country using the limited amount of information which you have been given. In order for you to pass this project, you must complete at least 15 points worth of compulsory ministers activities as a part of your 35 point minimum. Your tribe must have your country ready to present at a travel expo – on a date specified by your TLC teacher. Good Luck!

1. Check your work carefully before you hand it in.
2. Attach and fill in a cover sheet for your work before you submit it.
3. You must complete: at least one task from each P and " as well as at least one activity from õ and C.

4. You must attach a draft to all submitted work which has been corrected by a teacher and initialled

WORKSHOPS – already selected!!



Select 1 -3 workshops each and write on a class list

WS1 Design a holiday resort for your country. You are both the designer and the owner of the resort. Further direction will be given in the workshop. (Workshop – Individual/Pair: 2 – 4 points)

WS2 Create a performance of a National Dance for your country. Choose a style of music that you think would be appropriate to your country. Collect a checklist from Ms Nielsen at the workshop. (Workshop - Pair 2 – 4 points each)

" WS 3 Learn about different methods of governing a country. Choose a method that is appropriate for your country. Write a detailed explanation of how the government works, the major positions of responsibility, and justify your choice in terms of the information given about your country. (Workshop – Individual: 2 – 4 points)

@ WS4 Produce a key tag from a given size piece of material using the technology process. You will be required to:
· Complete investigation tasks relevant to the materials being used and the designs of existing key tags.
· Develop a given number of key tag designs and your reasons for your final choice.
· Produce the key tag from the materials supplied.
· Write an evaluation report.

WS5 Design and produce a postage stamp of your country. This stamp is to reflect your country in a positive and encouraging way. (Workshop – Individual: 2 – 4 points)

¯ WS6 Create your country’s own national anthem. Listen and analyse other national anthems and create your own which reflects your tribe’s country. (Workshop – Individual: 2 – 4 points)

C WS7 Your country’s zoo has chosen to adopt an endangered species from Indonesia. You will investigate and prepare a report on two animals that provides the following information:
· Why they are endangered
· The ways in which your country can help encourage the survival of the species.
· At least three possible problems that might be encountered by the adoption program.

You may choose to adopt the Javan rhinoceros, the Sumatran tiger or the Langur (a species of monkey) or the orang-utan of Sumatra. Ensure to use websites listed on student public. (Worksheet - Individual: 3 - 6 points)




PROJECT OPTIONALS





1. " Part 1: You must write a letter to a friend living in the country your tribe has created. In this letter describe your daily life as a secondary student living in Lara.
Part 2: Taking on the role of your cousin you must respond to your own letter explaining what life is like in your created country. (Individual 2-4 points)

Draft: It is expected that you will submit a rough draft of each letter and that they will be set out in correct letter format (including dates and addresses)(Individual: 2-4 points)

2. C Design a set of directions to inform visitors at your zoo how to find your two endangered animals from Indonesia. Use your directions from your resource book and write in Indonesian at least 5 clear directions for each animal. You must include di depan, di dekat and terus. Checklist required. (Individual: 2-4 points)

3. PThe current air conditioners in the school cool air at a cost of 1cent per cubic metre (m3) per session (90min), but the new Eco-Cooler costs only 0.4cents per m3. Measure and then calculate the volume of air in the room in m3 (floor area x average ceiling height). Calculate the cost to cool your room with the old vs. new coolers. Include your calculations in your proposal. (I/P : 3-6 points)

4. N Produce an A3 painting/drawing/collage of an imaginary animal that incorporates features or parts of existing native Australian animals. (Individual 2 – 4 points)

5. C Create five signs to assist Indonesian visitors to find animals at your zoo. Your signs must be in Indonesian and have a picture that illustrates its meaning. Add this information to your tribe’s zoo design. Add two sentences about ‘di mana di dunia?’ – Say where it lives and where it comes from. Checklist required. (Individual: 3-6 points)

6. õ Write a letter to your pen pal who lives in another country, outlining the physical, social and emotional changes experienced during puberty. (individual 1-2 points)

7. P The Sustainability Action Group wants to assess the amount of natural lighting in the classrooms. Measure and then calculate how much wall area is taken up with windows that let in natural light. Express your final answer as a fraction of total wall area. (I/P : 2-4 points)

8. " Using the set of 9 images available on the Intranet, write a creative story that includes all of the photos. The theme of the story needs to be travelling around the world. The length of the story is to be negotiated with your C&C teacher.

Draft: You must submit a draft of your story so that it can be checked for any mistakes before you begin a good copy. (Individual: 2-4 points)

9. P Make a net of your TLC room or your dream house from one piece of A4 paper. A net is a flat shape that can be folded into a 3D shape. You can cut out corners/windows/doors, but the net must stay in one piece. Show your N&L teacher how the net is folded into the model of your room/dream house. The more details in your design, the more points you’ll receive. (I : 3-6 points)

10. " Your tribe’s created country is to be featured in the travel guide Lonely Planet. It’s your task to write and design the layout for the articles relating to two of the cities. For each of these cities you must include all of the following:


· A paragraph describing the city, its location, some history, its main industries or attractions
· The city/town’s population
· The town’s attractions/areas of interest
· A map
· Places to stay
· Places to eat
· How to get there (public transport available

11. P Painting the Room: Measure and work out the surface area of the walls and the roof of your classroom. Take off any areas that are not painted such as windows and the white boards. Paint will coast $10 per litre and 1 litre will cover 3m². Work out how much paint will be required and how much it will cost. Show all working out and present it as a 1st draft. Once marked by a teacher, present all working out and results on an A3 sheet with pictures of each surface (walls and roof). (Pair: 2-4 points)






12. " COMPULSORY ACTIVITY: Create a front page for your country’s major newspaper for a particular day. It needs to report the news happening in your country, not anywhere else. (It should look just like the front page of the Herald Sun or Geelong Advertiser).
The front page needs to have the following (you may include other relevant things
· You newspaper’s name
· The date
· The price of the newspaper
· A main article
· A large image that relates to the main article (either hand drawn or a photograph)

Draft: You must submit a draft of the main news article that will be on the front page and a plan of what your front page will look like to demonstrate your understanding of the style and structure of a newspaper (Individual 1-2 points)

13. õ Research the history of one track and one field event. You must include:
· The country the event originated from
· Information about event including equipment, uniform, world record holders (include pictures)
· Any other interesting facts or information.
· A bibliography of where you obtained your information from.

14. P Find 3 foods that resemble the 3 different types of rocks – sedimentary, igneous, metamorphic. Draw labelled diagrams or present the foods and include an explanation of how the foods resemble the different types of rock. E.g. a sandwich is made of several layers like a _?_ rock. (I : 3-6 points)

15. " Produce a tourist brochure like those available at Tourist Information Centres for the country your tribe has created. The brochure must include pictures or illustrations and at least five of the following headings:


· Places of interest
· Money and exchange rates
· Climate
· Accommodation
· Leisure Activities
· Suggested Tours
· Major Cities
· Maps

16. " Interview the most famous person from your country. The person might be an artist, musician, scientist, politician, sportsperson, actor, humanitarian (person who is devoted to helping others) or something else. You need to either produce a video recording or an audio-tape of the interview, or you can present a role play to the class.

Draft: You must submit a draft of your script before you begin your good copy. It will need to include the questions and answers for the interview to demonstrate that you have gone into enough detail. (Individual 3-6 points)



17. N Draw a picture to show what the people in your country look like (they are human!) Include a man, woman and child in your picture, and have them dressed in typical clothes. (Individual: 2 – 4 points)

18. P Choose 4 main things that your country imports and 4 that it exports. Justify your choices in terms of the natural resources of your country and other information you were given. Draw graphs to show the cost of each of these imports using your country’s currency, and the overall cost of imports. Draw another graph to show the cost of each of the four exports using your country’s currency, and the overall cost of exports. Write a report explaining if your country makes or loses money from imports and exports. Comment on how this might affect wages and living conditions in your country. (Individual: 2 – 4 points)

19. õ Create an A3 sized Venn Diagram of the physical, social and emotional changes which occur in males and females during puberty. (Individual: 1-2)

21. Produce a coat of arms OR national emblem. Your design must reflect the history, culture, physical environment or native flora and fauna of your country. (Individual: 2 – 4 points)



22. P Draw a dichotomous key (each group is sub-divided into two groups) to classify the following: grass, duck, tree, horse, human, platypus, fish, flowering plant, dog, monkey, eagle, rock. Ask your N&L teacher for dichotomous key examples if you need them. (I : 2-4 points).

23. õ Plan the ideal opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games in Beijing. Include a sequence of events, description of entertainment and the countries involved. If you could nominate one track and field athlete to carry the Olympic torch, who would it be and why? (Pair/Individual 3-6 points)

24. " Part 1: Research three of the following religions from the table below and create a report that explains the major beliefs, rituals, customs, ceremonies and special days of each religion.

25. P Models of compounds: Using the following website http://www.nyu.edu/pages/mathmol/library/ each tribe member chooses at least one element or compound to create their own 3D model for the tribe to submit. Make sure you label each and the sizes of each of the atoms you use are correct (Hydrogen the smallest). (T 3 – 6 each)
26. " Part 1: Design a board game based on the tourist attractions, national holidays and culture of your created country.
Part 2: Teach the rules of the game to other students and get a review from them after they’ve finished (they’ll get 1 project point for doing this). You need to write up and submit their comments.

Draft: You must submit a draft of the game’s objectives (the aim) and its rules as well as a layout of what the board game will look like.

27. " Plan and create an advertisement for print, for radio (60sec), or a billboard for a new movie that’s set in your tribe’s created country. You also need to create and include a summary of the movie. In the summary you need to outline its genre, the actors, the storyline and some of the unique traits of your country that are featured in the film.

DraftYou must include a draft of your film’s summary plus a mock up or draft of the billboard or ad copy.

28. ¯ Create a pop group for your country – your country is unique so too is your music! Make a poster which gives dramatic impressions of your group focussing on image and musical style. (Individual 2-4 points)

29. õ Develop a plan for a 5 day International Athletics Competition in your country. Include at least 24 countries who participated in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Your plan will need to include:
· A program that covers all the track and field events that you will be including in the competition. Remember to include heats where necessary for the track events. The program will need to include dates and times. Be mindful of the climate!
· An invitation to other counties to participate in the tournament.
· A newspaper advertisement to promote the event in your country, and to give information about the tournament and how to get tickets. (Individual: 5 – 10 points)

30. Create a poster on drama elements. You must include at least 5 drama elements and an example of what they mean and how you would show these elements in a play. Use the correct poster criteria. (Individual: 4 points)

31. " Create a diorama that shows what a typical day is like in your country. It needs to include at least four of the following:


- People
- Houses and buildings
- Facilities
- Streets and roads
- Transport
- Agriculture
- Industry
- Native plants and animals
- Physical features (mountains, rivers, etc)
Draft: You must submit a sketch of your diorama that clearly shows what you are going to include in your diorama and what materials you will use (Individual: 3-6 points)

32. ¯ Create a code of graphic music notation unique to your country to complete and play an original composition for keyboard, guitar, drums and/or hand percussion. (Individual/Pair 2-4 points)

33. Find a photograph from a magazine or internet that has at least 3 – 5 people. Glue this on a sheet and write down who is everyone in the photo, where are they, and what is happening. Use your imagination but your answers must be justified by their body language. (Individual:2- 4 points)


34. P Soccer Field: The school wants to grow new grass and remark the lines on the soccer field. You are required to measure and work out the area of the field. Then you will need to work out the length of every line on the field. When measuring any circles, you will need to use the formula for working out the circumference of a circle which was used during term one. Present all information and working out as a 1st draft. Once the results have been marked of by a teacher, your group will need to present all working out and results on an A3 poster with illustrations of your soccer field. (Pair: 2-4 points)
