Learning Activities


‘Extremes’ Integrated Project Learning Contract

  • You will be given class time to complete a range of learning activities related to our theme.

  • You are to make selections from the Learning Activities using the following rules.

  • Tasks are labelled as I (individual), P (pair), T (tribe), Workshop, and Compulsory.

  • The points that can be earned from each activity are listed. The smaller number gives the least points you will earn on satisfactorily completing the task. The larger number gives the most points you can earn from completing the task very well.

  • Select individual activities to complete that will give you a total to achieve your points goal set in TLC.

  • Complete at least two individual learning tasks from each P and ".

  • Complete at least one activity from each other symbol. Students in 7 Green, 7 Purple, 7 Red and 7 Blue may select Food Technology activities. Students in 7 Yellow, 7 Orange and 7 White may select Fabric Technology activities.

  • Complete at least one Tribe activity.

  • Activities marked Compulsory must be completed by all students. These have been entered onto your contract document for you.

  • Activities marked Workshop can only be completed if you attend the appropriate workshop session. Your TLC teacher will let you know when these are on.

  • When submitting work electronically, students must ensure that they also submit a submission sheet on paper.

The activities you choose and outline in your Learning Contract must be adhered to. Changes can only be made for very good reasons and after negotiation with your teachers, SO CHOOSE CAREFULLY.

EXTREMES PROJECT ACTIVITIES

Workshops


1. " Produce rainfall and temperature graphs for two extreme climates. Describe the scene as you fly into one of these places. (Workshop / I: 3- 6 POINTS)

2. % Investigate drying as a food preservation technique. Use this method to dry foods. Write a report explaining the method that you used and comparing your results to commercially dried foods of the same type. (I:2 Workshops: 2-4 POINTS)

3. P Produce model icebergs and design, conduct and write a scientific report on an experiment to determine the effect of the salt content of the surrounding water, or the shape of the iceberg on the buoyancy of the iceberg. (P: Workshop: 4 – 8 POINTS)

4. P Conduct and report on a mathematical investigation related to extremes by exploring a problem and asking “What happens if…..?” (I/P: Workshop: 4 – 8 POINTS)

5. P Learn about how a glacier flows. Complete a series of three experiments provided by your teacher that illustrate this idea. Complete a scientific report of your work and a poster showing how a glacier moves. (P: Workshop: 4 – 8 POINTS)

6. " Prepare and participate in a debate based on a “hypothetical” provided relating to the future of Antarctica. (Workshop/I/P/T: 3-6 POINTS)

7. ­ Make an extreme hat from
a) polar fleece – students to supply own polar fleece

b) towelling – students to supply own fabric (Workshop I: 2 – 4 POINTS)

8. ­ Make mittens and scarf to match your hat. – students to supply own polar fleece, or wool and needles (Workshop available if needed/I: 2 – 4 POINTS)

9. N Complete an ‘extreme’ artwork using painting skills. Complete a reflection on this piece. (I: Workshop x 2: 4 – 8 POINTS)

10. C Create a number puzzle using Indonesian words and numbers. (Workshop I /P: 2 – 4 POINTS)

11. ­ Design and construct a hot water bottle cover. (students to supply own fabric). (Workshop I: 2 –4 POINTS)

12. " Construct a model to show how the tilt of the earth affects its climate. (I/P: Workshop: 4-8 POINTS)

13. N Create an extreme sculpture in 3D using cardboard, paint and paper mache (I: Workshop x2: 3-8 POINTS)

14. % Make a meal suitable to be frozen and must be suitable for consumption in a frozen environment. It will be eaten some time later. (I: Workshop: 2 – 4 pts)

15. " Prepare a PowerPoint presentation on the environmental concerns of an extreme environment. Minimum 6 slides. (I: Workshop 3-6 POINTS)


Remembering


16. P Use information provided by your N & L teacher to produce a thermometer poster that shows all significant temperatures throughout the year for a particular desert environment. (I: 1-2 POINTS)

17. " Design a flag for Antarctica that reflects its unique status in the world. Include symbols, not pictures and a detailed explanation of your colour and symbol choices. (I: 2-4 POINTS)

18. " Construct a limited word poster on an extreme environment or animal. Must include maximum 15 words, title, border, colour and images. (I: 2-4 POINTS)

19. P Produce a brochure/poster that explains what a glacier or an iceberg is. This could be done using the software program Publisher or with art materials.(I : 1-2 POINTS)

20. C Present 8 items of classroom equipment using the format Apa Itu? Apa Ini? Itu…Ini… Ada berapa…? Ada… (I: 2-4 POINTS)

21. " On a map of the world shade and name three areas where you might experience extreme environments. Explain your choices. (I: 1-2 POINTS)

22. õ Construct a venn diagram that identifies the physical changes experienced by males and females at puberty (I: 1 -2 POINTS).

23. % Make up a 3 course menu for a picnic meal that would be suitable to take on an outing to the snow, desert, on a boat or to the beach. Explain why you have selected each food and why it is suitable for that environment. (I: 1-2 POINTS)

24. P Make a facts sheet containing five facts each about icebergs, glaciers, ice shelves and sea ice. (I: 1-2 POINTS)

25. C Extremely big numbers. Make an A3 size chart to explain the Indonesian numbering system. Use tens, teens, hundreds and thousands. (I/P: 1-2 POINTS)

Understanding

26. P Make an Antarctica Algebra Puzzle book that contains at least 4 puzzles. Each person in the tribe must complete at least one puzzle. Provide worked solutions for each puzzle.(T: 3 – 6 POINTS)

27. P Make a poster that displays two ecosystems, one from Antarctica and another from a contrasting extreme environment. Show what plants and animals exist and the environmental conditions in each environment. (I: 2-4 POINTS)

28. P Draw a flowchart to show how an iceberg is formed. This could be done using the software program Inspiration or with art materials. (I :1-2 POINTS)

29. " Write 2 poems in different styles (NOT acrostic), about an extreme environment or animal (I: 2-4 POINTS)

30. " From a map provided brainstorm 20 interesting facts about an extreme environment location. Present your work in an interesting format. (I/P: 2-4 POINTS)

31. % Research two methods that could be used to preserve foods taken to Antarctica, and two methods that could be used to preserve foods taken to the tropics. List 5 foods suitable for each climate and method of preservation. Explain how long each food could be kept for using each method and the special preparations that would be needed to preserve each food. (I: 2-4 POINTS)

32. " Use information provided by your C&C teacher to locate a scientific research centre in Antarctica on the map provided (I: 1-2 POINTS)

33. P Make a directed number puzzle book based on the Antarctic environment. You must include at least 3 puzzles. (I: 2-4 POINTS)

Applying

34. "Produce a tourist brochure for an extreme environment. Your tour must be ‘green’ (environmentally friendly). This could be done using the software program Publisher or with art materials. (I/P: 3 – 6 POINTS)



35. C Make a book titled ‘Jam Berapa?’ Your book must include the days of the week, a different time for each of your activities and an appropriate drawing to explain your story. Minimum of 8 A5 sized pages. This could be done using the software program Publisher or with art materials. (I: Compulsory: 5 –10)

36. " Construct a Venn diagram to compare and contrast Antarctica to another extreme environment. You must have 10 dot points in each section (I: 1-2 POINTS)

37. P Use the information in ‘Who’s Eating Who’ on the Classroom Antarctica Website http://classroomantarctica.aad.gov.au/ to draw an Antarctic Food Web. Include labels to show the producers and consumers, the herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. Use pictures to illustrate your foodweb. (I/P: 4-8 POINTS)

38. õ “Pablo” is a keen and enthusiatic soccer player, however his passing skills continue to let his team down. Develop 3 drills that would enable Pablo to improve his passing skills. (I: 2 – 4 POINTS)

39. " You have travelled to an extreme environment. Design and write a postcard to home. Include a description of your picture and details of your trip. This could be done using the software program Publisher or with art materials. (I: 2 - 4 POINTS)

40. " Write an essay on an extreme environment or an extreme sport. Negotiate the topic and format with your teacher. ( I: 4 – 8 POINTS)

41. C Draw a line and a column graph of temperature and rainfall for a major Indonesian city and compare this with Melbourne. If you know how to use the software, use Excel to complete this task if you wish. Checklist Required (I: 1-2 POINTS)

42. õ Create a poster entitled “The beginners guide to the menstrual cycle”. You must include a description of what the menstrual cycle is; Why it exists; and What women can expect to experience throughout their menstrual cycle. (I: 2 – 4 POINTS).

43. C Use a Venn diagram to compare extreme differences in lifestyles in Denpasar, Bali and Mawson Station in the Antarctica. (I: 1-2 POINTS)

Analysing

44. C Create a conversation in Indonesian with a minimum of 10 questions and answers based around time, days of the week and extremely big numbers. Record onto an audio cassette or digitally. Checklist Required. (P: 4 – 8 POINTS)

45. õ Write a humorous story (not rude) which explains the physical changes that occur of a mlae or female during puberty. (200-250 words) (I: 3 – 6 POINTS).

46. " Design a house or a form of transport for an extreme environment. Create a labelled diagram and explain how the house or transport protects against the extreme environment. (I/P: 4-8 POINTS)

47. P Produce a poster showing two animals that live in different extreme environments. Show at least 5 adaptations that each animal has that help it to survive in the extreme environment. Compare the two animals and list their most striking differences. (I: 3-6 POINTS)

48. " Design clothes for an extreme environment. Presenting them on a poster using labels. On a separate sheet, explain how the clothes protect people in this environment.(I/P: 4-8 POINTS)

Evaluating

49. " Make a poster or booklet to explain eight rules for tourists visiting an extreme environment (either hot or cold). Explain how the rules will help to protect the environment. (I/P: 4-8 POINTS)

50. P Choose a topic for scientific research that you would like to conduct in Antarctica or in a desert. Write a letter to the government to convince them to fund your research. Include details of how your research experiments will be designed. (I : 3-6 POINTS)

51. ­ Find out what textile (fabric) items would be used in five (5) of the following extreme activities. Give a valid reason to each of your choice as to why the particular fabrics are used. (I/P: 2 – 4 POINTS)

53. C Develop and administer an Indonesian word recognition test for 10 LSC students. Write a report of your findings. Select one of the following test topics, Jam Berapa? Apa itu? Apa ini? Benda –benda di kelas or days of the week.. (I: 2-4 POINTS)

54. % List at least six criteria that should be considered when selecting foods for an Antarctic expedition. Foods could be scored as excellent, good, satisfactory or poor on each criterion. Choose twenty foods and rate each one using each of your criteria. Rank the foods from best to worst according to their overall rating. (/: 2 - 4 POINTS)

55. õ Interview two people from different age groups on 5 things that cause them stress in their lives. Get them to rank the 5 things from most stressful to least stressful. Make a list of 5 things that cause you stress in your life. Outline two strategies you use to manage stress in your life. (I:2 - 4 POINTS)

Creating

56. " Create an imaginary animal that could survive in Antarctica. You must use facts on animal survival and draw a labelled diagram of your creation. (I /P: 4-8 POINTS)

57. P Create a children’s Picture Story Book about your life as a water droplet. You must go through all changes of state and live in both the Antarctic and the Tropical environment. Describe how you change states and how your behaviour changes. (I: 3 – 6 POINTS)

58. " Write a song or poem describing at least 6 characteristics of an extreme environment. You must present it to your class and submit a written copy too. (I/P: 3-6 POINTS)

59. " Write a narrative story of survival in an extreme environment. It must be at least 400 words long. (I: 5-10 POINTS)

60. " As a group write the script and perform a segment for a documentary programme called Extremes. Compare two environments within the segment. (T: 5 –10 POINTS)

61. " Create a board game that is based on extreme sports. Incorporate questions about extreme sports into your game. You must also create rules for your game. (I/P: 4-6 POINTS)

62. P Write a script for and perform a play about your Tribes’ life as a group of water droplets. Include information about your properties and uses as solids, liquids and gases, and each of the four changes of state. You should travel through some extreme conditions during your play. (T: 4 – 8 POINTS)

63. " As a Tribe decide on an expedition to an extreme environment. Produce a report outlining the success or otherwise of your mission. Produce diary entries for all tribe members. Also include maps etc. (T: 5 –10 POINTS)

64. P Design and create a game based on Antarctica and another extreme environment that teaches people about directed numbers through temperature. (P: 3 – 6 POINTS)

65. C Design a song/or chant to teach the days of the week/ months of the year/ or how to tell the time. (I/P: 2-4 POINTS)

66. " Investigate the lives of the huskies of Antarctica and write a legend for younger readers based on your findings. (I/P: 3-6 POINTS)

67. N Choose one of the following artists; Picasso ‘Weeping Woman’, Edvard Munch, ‘The Scream’ , Frida Kahlo – Self Portrait. Examples of these paintings will be provided by your teacher.
Create your own version of one of these artworks using coloured pencils, pastels or markers (I: 3-6 POINTS)

68. N Complete a collage of an extreme image using a range of paper materials, such as coloured paper, tissue paper, pictures from magazines or cellophane (I/P: 3-6 POINTS)

69. õ Create a minor game that includes as many soccer skills as possible. Include playing area size, equipment needed, number of participants required, rules of the game and a detailed description of the game. (I/P: 3-6 POINTS)
